Michelmersh Silver Band Crowned West of England First Section Champions.
Michelmersh Silver Band travelled to Devon at the weekend to compete in the annual West of England Regional Brass Band Championships held in Torquay. Competing in the First Section against 15 other bands from all over the west of England, the set test piece this year was Gilbert Vintner’s Symphony of Marches, a work in three movements, each exploring the different aspects of the “March” form.
Weeks of hard work and intense rehearsal under the baton of Melvin White paid off as the band produced a stunning performance on the Riviera Centre stage earning high praise from both adjudicators. After a tense wait for the results, a huge roar of approval from band supporters and players greeted the announcement of Michelmersh Silver Band as ‘very clear winners’ in a strong field. The trophy and the Kapitol Promotions Ltd winner’s banner were presented on stage, along with an invitation for the band to represent the West of England at the National Brass Band Championships to be held in Cheltenham in September.
Band Chairman Adam Smith paid tribute to the commitment of band members today saying ‘This really is a huge achievement - a testament to their talent and their hard work, and very well deserved. We relish the challenge of representing the entire West of England in the National Finals later this year.’
Celebrations will be ongoing with the band planning a special celebration concert in the near future.
